Today I want to talk about something very important:

The power of social media — and why you should stop being romantic with excuses about not using it to build your business.

Years after secondary school, my junior brother Wunmi introduced me to the internet.

Yes, I don’t use it anymore. And yes, it’s true — your first email address is usually embarrassing.

But that day changed my life.

The moment I created that email, I told myself:

“I will make something meaningful out of this thing called the Internet.”

And I never looked back.

Why I Fell in Love With the Internet

I come from a family of seven children. My parents were hardworking and practical. My dad especially made sure we were prepared for real-life situations — managing money, handling responsibility, even doing tough jobs if necessary.

That foundation made me resilient.

But the internet opened my eyes to something bigger.

Limitless opportunity.

When Facebook arrived, I embraced it immediately. I started connecting, networking, learning.

Then in 2009, I had my breakthrough.

Discovering an Untapped Niche

I had been reading Success Digest magazine and learning about creating a digital footprint.

In 2006, I built my first website — kunlextech.tl — where I shared phone hacks and tips.

But in 2009, I discovered something interesting.

Millions of Nigerians were playing lotto (Baba Ijebu). Yet there was no online community for them.

I saw a gap.

So I created a Facebook page:
Betrelate (Baba Ijebu Pay Me My Dough)

That page became the biggest gambling discussion page in Nigeria.

I didn’t have money to build a sophisticated website then. So I leveraged Facebook — because it was free.

That decision changed everything.

Social Media Paid My Bills

The Facebook page gained traction. Lotto players across Nigeria knew it.

Later, I built a website to monetize the attention.

I paid my school bills from the income I generated online.

After graduation, I got my job through social media — without even formally applying.

Let that sink in.

Four Things That Shaped My Journey

1. Belief

I believed in myself early.

I had no financial backing, so I focused on relationship building.

From day one, I learned to build relationships before selling.

Today, that same strategy drives Micserah. We create valuable content before asking for a sale.

Believe first.

2. Foresight

While many people saw social media as a distraction, I saw potential.

You must learn to see trends before others do.

Social media was not a toy. It was infrastructure.

3. Self-Awareness

I understood my strengths.

I knew I could research, write, and build community.

I created a lotto eBook using Google research. I gave part one away for free and sold part two.

It sold out.

I made between ₦1–2 million while still in school.

Self-awareness is leverage.

If formal schooling isn’t your strength, find your advantage. Don’t blindly follow the crowd.

Google alone can teach you almost anything.

The problem is not lack of information.

The problem is lack of action.

4. Patience

I understood early that success is long term.

You must enjoy the process.

Uche — stop complaining about school.
Tola — you won’t be a millionaire at 30 if you start at 29.
Dauda — being 40 doesn’t mean it’s over. You still have decades ahead.

Everyone has time.

But you must start.

But here’s the key:

Work on your craft first.
Then push quality content consistently.
Then network strategically.
