IIf you want to learn how to sell, how to operate an agency shop, and how to get new customers, this is for you.
Let me make this very clear.
Retail. Retail. Retail.
I do not talk about it enough, but retail is the absolute foundation of my career. And if you do not understand retail in Nigeria, you will struggle in this industry.
Why Retail Is the Bedrock
When I look back at my journey, running over 10 shops, becoming a super agent, then master agent, managing the most popular virtual products in the country, and eventually becoming a managing director of a sports betting company, one thing remains consistent.
Everything comes down to:
The right product
Sales
Support
Marketing
Marketing and branding are important. I talk about them often. But branding alone does not sustain a betting company.
Transactions do.
And in Nigeria, retail still drives the majority of real transactions.
Online is powerful, yes. But online can sometimes be vague. You see sign-ups, but where are the actual bets? Why is marketing spend high and conversion low?
Retail gives clarity. Retail gives accountability. Retail drives numbers.
If you want to stay long term, you must understand this.
How Much Does It Cost to Set Up a Shop?
Before thinking about cost, understand your environment.
Ask yourself:
What is the population density?
What is the level of betting awareness?
What is the disposable income?
What is the poverty level?
For example, a shop in Oshodi may outperform one in Ikoyi, even though Ikoyi has higher disposable income. Why? Because betting participation, density, and demand differ.
Numbers matter more than assumptions.
Important Advice Before You Start
Have a secondary source of income or reserve funds.
You should be able to run the shop for at least one month before expecting break-even.
Cash flow pressure kills many new agents.
What You Need to Set Up
1. Location
Take this seriously.
Rent a shop because it is well located, not because it is cheap.
A dense residential area with a mix of 70% residential and 30% commercial is ideal.
Avoid relying on “passing traffic” from highways. Resident density beats highway visibility.
In Lagos, rent between 150K and 500K per year is reasonable depending on location. In cities like Ibadan, Ado, Ogbomosho, Kubwa, and parts of the East, 40K to 300K annually is realistic.
The shop should not be too small. A 12ft by 15ft space or bigger is ideal. Comfort increases customer retention.
Avoid mixing betting with unrelated businesses that conflict operationally. I have seen agents lose inventory combining betting with shoe sales and gaming consoles.
Focus.
2. Computers
You can use laptops or desktops.
Desktops are cheaper and harder to steal but require more power.
Two used laptops may cost between 50K and 70K depending on quality.
3. Cashier Counter
Build a proper wooden cashier counter to separate staff from customers.
Budget between 30K and 150K depending on size.
Structure improves professionalism and security.
4. Chairs
Comfort matters.
Budget approximately 12,500 to 15,000 per dozen chairs depending on quality.
5. Generator
Do not use low-quality generators.
Invest in a 2.2KVA to 5KVA generator depending on your setup. Budget between 25K and 120K.
Power stability directly affects revenue.
6. Internet
Speed equals money.
If available in your area, use LTE providers such as Spectranet, Smile, Swift, or wifi.com.ng.
If unavailable, use reliable 4G GSM providers. Prioritize network stability.
If budget allows, VSAT is even better.
Reliable internet reduces transaction failure and improves customer trust.
7. Thermal Printer
Use POS80 or POS58 printers.
POS80 is preferable for clearer and bolder printouts.
Budget approximately 23K.
Choosing the Right Company to Partner With
Research carefully.
Ask about:
Transparency
Commission structure
Product stability
Retail support
Virtual offerings
Most companies will provide:
Banner signage
Platform account access
Dish and decoder for virtual products
Setup costs can range conservatively from 500,000 to 2,000,000 depending on size and location.
Final Advice
Retail is not glamorous.
But it works.
If you understand your market, manage costs wisely, focus on customer experience, and partner with the right company, you will succeed.

Support
Speed
Trust

My saddest moment: In 2012/2013 After I spent a lot to start-up a shop but it was disapproved by the bet9ja super agent because he wanted to set up his or one of his boys shop in that location. So, I moved to other bet to take revenge but my laptops were stolen 3 times (in total of 10 Laptops), anytime I planned to progress or get another outlet. But I thank God I passed all the challenges...They all tried to fall me but I have a self confidence. Also tries to read more motivational quotes. it makes me to still be in sport gaming business.
